INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Common application form to seek admission to M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. degree programmes
offered in the University Departments of Anna University Chennai, Anna University Coimbatore, Anna
University Trichy and Anna University Tirunelveli, Government, Government Aided Engineering
Colleges and seats surrendered by the self-financing Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu, through
single window system of admission (TANCA 2010).
GENERAL STRUCTURE OF P.G. PROGRAMMES
Full-Time PG programmes comprises of 4 semesters (2 years) and Part-Time programme has 6
semesters (3 years).
MODE OF STUDY
Full-Time:
Candidates admitted under ‘Full-Time’ should be available in the departments during working
hours for the curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The Full-Time candidates should not attend any other Full-Time programme(s) / course(s) or take
up any Full-Time job / Part-Time job in any institution or company during the period of Full-Time
programme. Violation of the above rules will result in cancellation of admission of the
PG Programme.
Part-Time:
Part-Time candidates are not permitted to convert to Full-Time mode during the course of study.
1. CATEGORY OF INSTITUTIONS
The Government of Tamil Nadu in G.O. 1(D) No.32, Higher Education, (J2 Department), dated
3.3.2008 have authorised Anna University Chennai as a nodal agency to conduct the Tamil Nadu
Common Admissions through single window system for M.E. / M.Tech. / M.Arch. / M.Plan degree
programmes offered at
i. University Departments of Anna University Chennai, Anna University Coimbatore, Anna
University Trichy and Anna University Tirunelveli.
ii. Government and Government Aided Engineering Colleges and
iii. Seats surrendered by self-financing Engineering Colleges
2. ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who have passed the qualifying degree course with TANCET 2010 score or valid
GATE-A 2010 or GATE-B 2010 with TANCET 2010 score shall be considered for admission to
M.E. / M.Tech. / M.Arch. / M.Plan. degree programmes. Eligibility qualifications for admission to
various M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Arch./ M.Plan. degree programmes are given in Annexure I.

Candidates in the following categories may apply for admission:
a. Candidates appeared for the final semester/year examination of the said qualifying degree
programmes during April / May 2010.
b. Candidates with Section A & B certificate examinations conducted by various professional
bodies viz., The Institution of Engineers, Aeronautical Society of India etc., recognised by the
Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India are considered equivalent to
B.E./ B.Tech degree programmes for admission to M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Arch./ M.Plan.
programmes offered with the following conditions:
1. Two years of Industrial experience in the relevant field after obtaining A.M.I.E. or similar
certificates.
2. Must have valid GATE 2010 score / TANCET 2010 score.
3. NATIVITY
Candidates who have studied continuously for the last 5 years (from XII Standard
onwards) in Tamil Nadu will be considered as Tamil Nadu candidates. Candidates who are
Native of Tamil Nadu but have studied XII or/ and Degree out side Tamil Nadu have to produce
the “Nativity Certificate” (vide Certificate No.I on Page No.28) obtained from the Tahsildar of
their Native Taluk/District of Tamil Nadu for considering them as Tamil Nadu candidates.
4. FILING OF APPLICATIONS / REGISTRATION (GATE / NON – GATE – REGULAR & SELF –
SUPPORTING)
Separate application has to be filed for each category. (1) GATE-A (2) GATE-B (3) Non-GATE
(4) Sponsored.
4.1 CATEGORIES

1 GATE Category
a. GATE-A : Candidates who have a valid GATE 2010 score in the appropriate discipline of
Engineering / Technology.
b. GATE-B : Candidates who have a valid GATE 2010 score in Engineering Science (XE)
and Life Science (XL) papers. Candidates under this category should have also appeared
for TANCET – 2010 conducted by Anna University Chennai.

2 Non-GATE Category
a. Candidates who have appeared for TANCET 2010 conducted by Anna University
Chennai.
b. Candidates who have qualified in GATE 2010 and are willing to be considered under Non-
GATE category should have appeared for TANCET 2010.
3 Sponsored Category (only for University Departments of Anna University Chennai)
A limited number of seats (Full-Time / Part-time study) are available in some P.G. degree
programmes for the candidates employed and sponsored by the Government Organisations
/ Government / Government Aided Educational Institutions under sponsored category at
the University Departments of Anna University Chennai only.
In Govt. / Govt. Aided Engineering Colleges, seats under sponsored category will
be allotted by the individual institutions and the candidates have to apply
separately to the institutions concerned.
All the candidates under sponsored category should have appeared for TANCET 2010
conducted by Anna University Chennai.
In addition, the candidates admitted under sponsored category in the University
Departments of Anna University Chennai should satisfy the following.
Sponsored Full-time
• Candidates should be deputed with full pay and allowances during the period of study.
• Candidates should have obtained 55 % marks or above in aggregate in the qualifying
examination. However, the minimum percentage of marks is relaxed for the teachers in
AICTE approved Engineering Colleges/ Polytechnics.
• Candidates must have a minimum of two years full time experience in the relevant field of
the programme to which admission is sought after passing the qualifying degree.
Sponsored Part-Time
• Candidates should have their permanent place of work within a distance of 90 km. by road
from the study campus of Anna University Chennai.
• Candidates should have a minimum of one-year regular employment in time scale of pay
(not on consolidated salary) after passing the qualifying examination. They should be
working in the relevant field in which admission is sought.
• Candidates should have obtained 55 % marks or above in aggregate in the qualifying
examination. However, the minimum percentage of marks is relaxed for the teachers
working in AICTE approved Engineering Colleges/Polytechnics.
• Classes will be held during day time only.

4.2 STIPEND (GATE category)
GATE qualified candidates admitted under GATE (or) GATE – B category (other than
those deputed / sponsored) shall be considered eligible for stipend funded by the
MHRD, GOI, only if the marks secured are more than or equal to the qualifying mark
in the category under which the candidate is admitted as detailed below. Tamil Nadu
Native candidates alone will be considered under BC / BCM / MBC & DNC / SC / SCA / ST
categories.

Other State candidates will be considered under “Others” category only.
M.E. (Integrated Water Resource Management)
Few seats in M.E. (Integrated Water Resources Management) are available for women candidates
and eligible for South Asia Water Fellowship (SAWA Fellowship) of Rs.10,000/- per month (for
which TANCET is not required) but, selection is based on an interview. Separate application has
to be filed and on the top of the application write “Application for M.E. (IWRM) for SAWA
Fellowship”.
5. SELECTION PROCEDURE
a. GATE category
For GATE-A category, the merit list will be prepared based on GATE 2010 score.
For GATE-B, the merit list will be prepared based on GATE-B 2010 score and
TANCET 2010 marks, with category a weightage of 70:30.
A common merit list will be prepared for GATE-A and GATE-B category.
b. NON-GATE category
The merit list will be prepared based on TANCET 2010 marks.

c. Sponsored category (Only for University Departments of Anna University Chennai)
The merit list will be prepared based on TANCET 2010 marks.
A common rank list will be prepared for SC, SC (Arunthathiyars) & ST candidates under GATE
category.
Inter-se-merit: In case where more than one candidate have got the same score/marks
obtained in TANCET – 2010 while preparing merit list, the candidates having higher average
percentage of marks upto pre-final semester / year of the qualifying degree exam will be given
higher rank.
The merit list will be published in the website of Anna University Chennai.
6 ALLOCATION OF SEATS
6.1 Selection shall be made under seven categories namely OC, BC, BCM (BC Muslim),
MBC & DNC, SC, SCA and ST reservations following the rules of reservation of the
Government of Tamil Nadu as follows.

Tamil Nadu native candidates alone will be considered for communal reservations. The list of
communities eligible to compete against the reserved quota is shown in Annexure-II on Page
Nos.21-27.
6.2 Candidates seeking admission against SC/SCA/MBC & DNC / BC/BCM (BC Muslim) quota should
obtain the certificates of social status issued by the competent authority in the prescribed
Permanent Community Card in Tamil Nadu and enclose an attested photo copy of the same
along with the application.
a) The applicants from Tamil Nadu State should have a valid permanent community certificate
in the card format issued by the competent authority (for ST/SC/MBC & DNC and BC in the
format prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu in G.O. Ms.No.781 (Revenue
Department) dated: 02.05.1988. This is applicable for BCM (BC Muslim) also. In the case
of ST candidates, the community certificate should have been issued by the Revenue
Divisional Officer / P.A. (General) to the Collector of Chennai / Sub-Collector of the District
concerned (except Chennai) vide Govt. Lr.No. 32061/ADWII/89-2, dt: 27.12.1989 and
Lr.No.21424/ADWII/94-4, dt: 15.11.1994 from the Secretary to Government, Adi Dravidar
and Tribal Welfare Department, Chennai – 600 009. The Permanent Community Certificate
Card issued to ST candidates by Tahsildars upto 11.11.1989 only is valid.
b) Community Certificate obtained from Other States will not be considered for communal
reservation.

c) For communities linked with districts (Refer Annexure – II the information and
instructions to candidates) the candidates should obtain their community certificate in the
respective district. Community certificates obtained from other than the respective district
will not be considered. However, the candidates who belong to BC, MBC and DNC
communities in a particular district and migrated to other places in Tamil Nadu and
obtained Community Certificates from the competent authorities in the migrated district on
or after 28.10.2009, will be considered. (as per G.O. (St) No.95 BC, MBC & Minorities
Welfare Department, dated 28.10.2009).
d) Candidates who have not enclosed an attested photo copy of the Permanent Community
Card certificate will be treated under Open Category (OC).
7. DIFFERENTLY ABLED PERSON CATEGORY
(As per Medical Certificate given in Certificate No. II, III & IV if applicable)
Candidates seeking admission against the reservation set apart for Orthopaedically Differently
Abled Persons / Hearing Impaired (Deaf) / Visually Impaired should produce the certificate from
the District Medical Board certifying the nature and extent of disability in percentage and
with regard to the suitability for admission to colleges specifically mentioned below. Certificate
obtained from an individual doctor will not be considered. The certificate should be in the
prescribed format.
7.1 Eligibility criteria for various disabilities
a. Norms for Orthopaedic Disability
Candidates with permanent physical impairment of 40% and above are considered as
disabled. The candidates with orthopaedic disability of the following types are eligible for
claiming Admission against Differently Abled Persons category (Certificate No.II on Page
No.29)
(i) Independent in ambulance with or without calipers but without walking aids.
(ii) Good standing balance without calipers but without any support.
(iii) Hand Function with normal limit without any aid
(iv) Good control over bladder & bowl
(v) Disease must be non progressive
b. Norms for Hearing Disability
Candidates with hearing ability of 40 db and above only in the better ear with speech
discriminations score of 50% and above are considered as disabled. (Certificate No.III on
Page No.30)
c. Norms for Vision Impairment
Candidates with low vision of 40% and above are considered as disabled. (Certificate No.IV on
Page No.31)

Low Vision: Persons with low vision means a person with impairment of vision of less than 6/18
to 6/60 with best correction in the better eye or impairment of field in any one of the following
categories:
a) Reduction of fields less than 50 degrees.
b) Heminaopia with macular involvement.
c) Attitudinal defect involving lower fields.

8 COUNSELLING
8.1 Candidates will be admitted through counselling only. More number of candidates than
the actual number of seats available will be called for counselling. Admission will be
offered depending upon the seats available based on the merit of the candidates who attend
counselling as per reservation norms of Govt. of Tamil Nadu and others cannot claim any right
for admission. A candidate can get allotment for one programme only.
Note : The number of seats/courses/branches available/not available are subject to change
before the counselling.
8.2 GATE candidates must appear for counselling with the original GATE 2010 score card
(Additional card will not be accepted). Candidates without the original GATE 2010 score card
will not be permitted to attend the counselling. If a seat is allotted under GATE category, the
candidate has to submit the original GATE score card.
Candidates who have passed all the subjects of the qualifying degree examination alone will be
allowed to attend the counselling.
Candidates who have passed all the subjects in the qualifying degree examination but have not
yet received the provisional/degree certificate and if such candidates are offered provisional
admission they have to join the programme on the prescribed date after paying the prescribed
fee. However, they must produce the Provisional/Degree Certificate on or before 4.10.2010.
The provisional admission of those who fail to produce the said certificate on or before the
specified date, even if eligible, will automatically stand cancelled and they have to discontinue
the programme.

Candidates rank and also the date of counselling will be informed individually through the
counselling call letter by ordinary post.
The counselling schedule and cut-off mark will be published in the leading news papers and in
the website of Anna University Chennai http://www.annauniv.edu/tanca2010.
Eligible candidates may appear for counselling according to their cut-off mark, two hours
before the counselling session, irrespective of receipt of individual communication.
Candidates who do not attend the counselling may have to forego the claim of admission.
Counselling will be held at Anna University Chennai, Chennai 25. Candidates should attend the
counselling at their own cost with all the original certificates. If a candidate has deposited all
the certificates where he/she has already been admitted, a letter from the head of the
institution should be produced to that effect. In such case only, attested photo copies of
certificates will be accepted (except GATE score card). However, the original allotment order
will be withheld and it will be released after the verification of original certificates.
No change of date/time of counselling is permissible. Authorities are not responsible for the
postal delay or non receipt of counselling intimation.
At the time of counselling the candidates have to pay Rs.5,300/- (Rs.1,150/- in case of SC
/ SCA / ST candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu) which includes a non-refundable fee of
Rs.300/-towards counselling fee (Rs.150/- in case of SC/SCA/ST candidates belonging to
Tamil Nadu) and attend the counselling with all the original certificates.
Due to unforeseen and unavoidable reasons, if a candidate is unable to attend the counselling
on the specified date and time, he/she can authorise his/her parent on his/her behalf and the
parent’s decision will be binding on the candidate. An authorisation letter given by the student
must be submitted in this regard by the parents.
Due to unforeseen reasons, if a candidate could not attend the counselling on the specified
date and time, he/she can attend on a subsequent time/date, during the counselling period.
But the candidate can only opt for the seats available at the time of attending the counselling
and cannot claim any seat as per the rank.
Once allotted a seat, the amount of Rs.5,000/- for general (Rs.1,000/-in case of
SC/SCA/ST candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu) already paid at the time of counselling will
be adjusted towards the tution fee that has to be paid to the respective allotted college. If a
candidate does not join as per the allotment and seeks refund, only 80% of the initial deposit
amount paid at the time counselling will be refunded, if original allotment order with
acknowledgement for the receipt of payment is surrendered on or before 31.12.2010. All
admissions made through the single window system are provisional.

The Demand Draft should be drawn in favour of “The Secretary, TANCA, Anna University
Chennai” payable at Chennai.
For further correspondence
1) For GATE category, quote the Application Number.
2) For Non-GATE Sponsored categories quote the TANCET 2010 Registration Number.
Candidates are advised to post the completed application well in advance so as to reach Anna
University Chennai on or before the specified date and time. Application may be sent by
Registered post or Speed post to avoid any delay.
The Secretary, Tamil Nadu Common Admission will not be responsible for postal or
any other delay. Applications received after the last date and time will be
summarily rejected.
Candidates who want to receive the counselling call letter by Registered post or Speed post
must affix stamps covering Speed Post or Registered Post charges on the envelope meant for
call letter for Counselling and mention “By Registered Post or Speed Post” on it.
Candidates once allotted will be given the provisional allotment order and receipt for the initial
payment. The candidates have to pay the remaining fees in the college concerned at the time
of admission on the date specified in the allotment order. No further correspondence will be
entertained on the matter pertaining to Admissions.
Counselling and allotting authorities reserve the right to accept or reject any application
without assigning any reason.
College / Branch once allotted will not be changed under any circumstances.

9 GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ADMISSION
General information about admission is as follows.
• Separate application has to be filed for each category (GATE/Non-GATE/Sponsored)
• Candidates must fill the application form and coding sheet carefully.
• Candidates other than GATE A category must have appeared for TANCET 2010.
• Candidates must have passed degree / appeared for the final semester / year examination of
the qualifying degree examination from recognised Universities.
• Seats will be filled as per the reservation norms prescribed by the Government of Tamilnadu.
• Hostel accommodation is not available for the students admitted in the University
Departments of Anna University Chennai.
• If a GATE candidate desires to be considered under the Non – GATE category also, he/she
should have appeared for TANCET 2010 and has to apply for TANCA under Non-GATE
category.
• Candidates seeking admission to part-time (evening) programmes should ensure authorities
that they will be in a position to attend the classes in the evenings and also on holidays and
fulfill the requirements regarding attendance as laid down by the University from time to time.
If they are working, the working place should be within a distance of 90 km from the study
campus.
Information like the courses offered, facilities etc., are available in the booklet containing
“Information about Colleges”. Other details regarding scholarship, fee concession, hostel
facilities etc., can be obtained from the Principal/Dean of the Institutions concerned.
Selection of the college and branch of study is the sole responsibility of the candidate.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES THE COLLEGE OR BRANCH ALLOTTED WILL BE CHANGED.
10 DOCUMENTS TO BE ENCLOSED WITH THE COMPLETED APPLICATION
Attested photo copy (Originals should not be enclosed) of the following documents
